I'm AJ Addae, I'm 21, and I'm the founder of a cosmetic R&D laboratory called sula labs. As a former clinical R&D scientist, my background is in cosmetic formulation and dermatologic research science, with a recent first-author publication in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology.
sula labs is an R&D laboratory and creative space that develops skin, body, and personal care products for startup businesses with skin of color in mind. Since our launch in September, we've accomplished/worked with:
- 6 indie beauty brands' product development
- 1 tech company, now investor backed
- 1 consumer in-use study
- 1 in-vitro study for dark skin types
All are projects that center skin of color or darker skin types.
Black Futures' Month is a forward-looking, visionary spin on celebrations on Blackness in February. Therefore, it’s a great time for dreaming, envisioning, re-imagining, and most importantly, investing in the Black community — everything it is, was, and can be. As a Black-owned company, we take this very seriously.
What sula labs sees in our future:
- A paid lab intern.
- Affording larger equipment and testing costs.
- A designated inventory space.
- More lab studies.
- Community and mentorship.
- ...and more!
We believe in a future of collective Black joy, health, and big dreams - consider donating, sharing, and spreading through your networks to help get us to our goal!
