Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme Emergency Funds

Donation protected

The Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme (SOCP) Orangutan Quarantine & Rehabilitation Centre in North Sumatra has been devastated by a series of landslides that hit in the early hours of Wednesday 27 November, 2024. This was due to a high level of rainfall that is causing floods and the loss of human lives throughout Southeast Asia. After all this it is extremely fortunate that no staff or orangutans were injured, but the centre has completely lost their veterinary clinic and much of the infrastructure that houses the orangutans, including sick and infant orangutans.

Although the immediate focus is on clearing debris, stabilising the affected areas, and assessing the full extent of the damage, the team on the ground are in desperate need of emergency funding to ensure the staff and orangutans remain safe and care can be continued for the 41 orangutans on site.

SOCPs Senior Veterinarian is currently visiting Australia and we are fundraising to provide crucial funds so she can collect baby bottles, blankets and any equipment needed to ensure that the team have the essentials to care for the orangutans.

About
The SOCP Quarantine & Rehabilitation Centre serves as both a rescue facility and a rehabilitation site for orangutans impacted by the illegal wildlife trade, deforestation and human-wildlife conflict. Combined these threats have taken a huge toll on the species with all three being listed as Critically Endangered. The centre prepares rescued orangutans for reintroduction into their natural habitats through medical care, rehabilitation and socialisation training. Since its establishment in 2001 SOCP has cared for over 463 orangutans, successfully reintroducing 352 of these into the wild, 211 at the edge of the Bukit Tigapuluh National Park in Jambi and 141 in the Jantho Nature Reserve in Aceh. Through these efforts two entirely new genetically viable populations have been established in historic ranges, a crucial step to ensuring this species does not go extinct.
