Hi, my name is Kimora. I am 16 year old member of the Navajo Nation, I am a Junior in High School.
I have been dancing since I was 5 years old, starting with tap & ballet dance. I tried jazz, modern, contemporary, hip hop, and theater dance. I keep going back to ballet, I immediately fell in love with Pointe. Some of the women I admire that dance ballet are Lindsey Stirling & Misty Copeland.
My first dance school did not think I was ready for pointe; each semester I kept getting told “maybe next year”. My parents decided I should try another dance school, when we did I asked about pointe and they did not hesitate to put me in pointe. I got my first Pointe shoes February 6, 2021. At my pointe shoe fitting, the lady was very impress with my movements (she thought I had been doing pointe for awhile) I told her this was my first time in pointe shoes. I fell in love dancing Pointe, taking as many classes that were available to me. I want to keep growing and improving with hopes of going to school for ballet after I graduate.
I became interested in summer dance intensive’s because I get to work with new teachers that have different styles of ballet & pointe. I have done intensive classes the past two years at Ballet Durango. They were very challenging and made me a better dancer, making me want to try a top tier dance school intensive.
In December my mom told about Joffrey Ballet School was having in person auditions for their summer intensives. My parents encouraged me to sign up for the audition, even if I did not get a spot I would gain experience for future auditions. The audition was January 21st in Albuquerque, NM which is 3 hours away.
On January 27th I received an email stating I was accepted to the Summer Intensive Ballet program. Unfortunately I did not receive a scholarship for the intensive.
I am asking for help to attend Joffrey Colorado intensive in Boulder, CO. This is a three week course, June 30 to July 19.
Funds will be used to help cover tuition, housing, student meal plan, travel expenses from Kirtland, New Mexico to Boulder, Colorado, and 10-15 pairs of pointe shoes.
