Mission Matterhorn

Hi

My name is Connor Oxberry, a former British Forces sniper.

Each year for as long as I can remember, I have taken part in organised charity events to raise money for a series of different organisations.

I do this mainly to do my part but also to challenge myself, as these events are generally physically demanding in some way or another. I find the idea of helping others, whilst challenging myself, a remarkably satisfying experience.

This year I’ve decided to challenge myself even further with something a lot harder to help raise funds for two separate charities (more details about these charities below).

This year's challenge is climbing and summiting The Matterhorn Mountain in Switzerland. Standing at 4473m (14,691.6ft) in elevation. Matterhorn mountain is an iconic landmark and is considered one of the most challenging mountains for a novice climber to summit.

I feel this will be a great challenge for me. To know that I will have certainly earned the donations for the charities will be rewarding!

The Charities

No. 1

The Bowel Movement

They are a small bowel cancer charity with a big mission to support individuals and their families with a life-changing diagnosis. They offer a variety of support, relief and awareness through a variety of different channels, events and activities.

Their primary aims are to:

Increase awareness and education: To advance the education of, in particular, young individuals (under the age of 50), by promoting understanding, awareness, early detection and treatment of bowel cancer;

Provide Relief: To provide relief to those in need who have been disadvantaged due to ill health or financial hardship as a result of a bowel cancer diagnosis and/or to their carers and families; and

Support individuals: To relieve sickness and preserve the health of the patients of bowel cancer by providing or assisting in the provision of equipment, facilities and services to aid the treatment of bowel cancer.

Scotties Little Soldiers -

This charity is one close to my heart. A charity solely to support bereaved children who have lost their parents to war and conflict. Support includes day trips, experiences, mental health support, companionship, and guidance. All of these are affected when losing a parent as a small child.

When a parent dies, the impact on their child is significant. When that parent served in the British Forces, the impact is even greater, with children often feeling they’ve lost their connection to the military community. Scotty’s Little Soldiers prevents that. Together, we can ensure the very best bereavement support remains available.

The Mission

The task ahead won’t be easy, and as such, my training has already begun to ensure a successful summit. If I can’t summit the mountain for whatever reason, I can assure you it won’t be down to my own personal limitations.

To limit and reduce the risk of a failed summit, I will be appointing a guide and an expedition company to assist in the planning of the trip and to help guide the way.
