Climibing Mount Kilimanjaro for a Cause

When my 18-year-old son Brian died in a car accident in 2013, a part of me died that night. However, a new part of me was born. A part of me to achieve great things in life that my son Brian would no longer have the chance to do. My son, Kevin, has felt much the same way as me since his brother died. We have spoken extensively about wanting to challenge ourselves physically and mentally. Furthermore, I wanted to do something beyond my everyday life as a neurosurgeon. We were searching for a challenge that seemed impossible to us. Climbing the nearly 20,000 feet below-freezing, snow-covered peaks of Mount Kilimanjaro was what we landed on.
Kevin and I's goal is to raise money for SameYou and Tanzania Health and Medical Education Foundation (TAHMEF).
TAHMEF is a charity focused on providing medical access and education for people in Tanzania who would not otherwise have access to these vital resources.
We will be documenting our entire journey, including our training and preparation, and culminating in the climbing of Mount Kilimanjaro in September 2024.
SameYou "is a brain injury recovery charity that works to develop better mental health recovery treatment for survivors, raises awareness and advocates for change."
Tanzania Health and Medical Education Foundation (TAHMEF) "is a non-profit, non-governmental organization on a mission to bridge socio-economic gaps that limit quality healthcare accessibility through leveraging digital solutions. Founded in Tanzania, our work has served Tanzanians in informal sectors, the rural-poor and indigenous communities since 2015, promoting health equity through provision of health education, health screening and supporting families’ enrollment in affordable health coverage schemes."
