The SUMUD: Resistance Until Liberation mural project is a collaboration between artists and activists in the U.S. and Palestine that explores and confronts the deep interconnections between the brutal systems of imprisonment in the U.S. and Palestine. Over 35 local organizations are involved in its creation.
This community mural is taking place in the vibrant heart of Oakland, a hub of movement and organizing with a long history of international solidarity. It extends the life and builds on the legacy of the existing Oakland to Palestine Solidarity Mural on its 10th anniversary, across the street from where this new mural will take hold.
The mural will serve as a demonstration of the Palestinian Liberation Movement’s vibrancy and a memorialization of this historical moment in our struggle globally and locally in the Bay Area.
In both the US and Palestine, creating art is often a political act and a testament to the imagination, brilliance, and creativity of people’s resistance to oppression. As death and destruction rain down on the people of Gaza and Palestine, painting this mural together as a community can affirm our collective commitment to resistance and liberation.
In the future, the mural will be utilized as the backdrop for more community events to come! The creation of an outdoor event space surrounded by insurgent community art opens dynamic possibilities for interaction and education!
The total square foot of mural space is approximately 4430 Sq. feet, including a building facade and 3 walls. The total project will cost us $31,010, which is $7 per square foot and includes paint, brushes, and lifts, not including labor.
Please give what you can to help sustain this important work. We need your support to make this project a reality.
