Help Rebuild Sunderland Roller Derby and Support the Fight Against Motor Neurone Disease
On Sunday 25th of August 2024, Sunderland Roller Derby and friends will embark on a sponsored Pier to Pier skate, starting at South Shields Pier and ending at Roker Pier in Sunderland covering a scenic route of approximately 7 miles! Click here to view our route. Skaters from the team, and our friends in the community, are training hard and raring to take on this challenge. This challenge promises fun and camaraderie, all while supporting a worthy cause. The team would greatly appreciate any donations received, thank you!
The total monies raised will be shared between our chosen charity Motor Neurone Disease Association and Sunderland Roller derby. Our chosen charity MND Association is a group run entirely by volunteers and aims to provide the best possible support to local people with MND, their families, and carers. Our Story
Hey there! We're Sunderland Roller Derby, a passionate group of folks who’ve been rolling together since 2014. Our mission? To create a fun, inclusive community where everyone—no matter their gender—can enjoy the thrill of roller derby. We’re like a family, welcoming newbies and seasoned skaters alike. What unites us is our love for the sport and our commitment to lifting each other up.
The Challenge
Like many sports teams, Sunderland Roller Derby was hit hard by the pandemic. The enforced hiatus took a toll on our team, both in terms of membership and finances. Now, as we navigate the ongoing cost of living crisis, we're working hard to rebuild our team and return to the track stronger than ever.
Despite these challenges, we made a triumphant return in April with a thrilling match against our neighbours in York. That game reignited our passion and reminded us why we love this sport so much. Now, we’re more fired up than ever to keep rolling, growing, and making a positive impact.
Our Goals
- Rebuild the Team: We want to bring in new members and keep our current skaters motivated with great training and support.
- Enhance Our Training: We’re looking to invest in better equipment and secure regular practice spots so everyone can improve safely and effectively.
- Compete Regularly: We aim to play in more local matches and eventually, as a league, host matches of our own, solidifying our presence in the roller derby community.
Supporting a Cause Close to Our Hearts
But it’s not just about us. We’re also committed to giving back. For every £1 we raise, 50p will go to the Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association. This cause is very dear to us because we’ve seen firsthand how tough MND can be on families and friends. Any money raised above our target will continue to be shared in this way.
How You Can Help
We could really use your help to hit these goals and keep our wheels turning. Your donation will go towards:
- Hiring venues for training and matches
- Buying equipment and gear for our skaters
- Covering travel expenses for away games
- Marketing and outreach to bring in new members
