Sunrise Providence Strike Fund

[Updated 12/7/19]  On Friday, December 6th, 14 members of Sunrise were arrested while occupying the R.I. State House to demand that Governor Gina Raimondo reject campaign contributions from the fossil fuel industry by signing the No Fossil Fuel Money Pledge. All 14 were released that night after being charged with Trespassing and Obstruction for their act of civil disobedience. To be released, each individual was made to pay $50 to the Justice of the Peace and received a summons to appear in court in January. We are raising funds to help cover the costs of these legal fees.

The brave young organizers were arrested after committing to sit-in until Governor Raimondo agreed to prioritize their generation's health and well-being over the profits of fossil fuel billionaires. Raimondo has taken $500,000 in campaign contributions tied to the fossil fuel industry.  This includes maximum donations from the CEO and founder of Invenergy, the President and Vice President of National Grid in R.I., and the billionaire chairwoman of Samson Energy Company. Raimondo supported Invenergy's plan to build a power plant in Burrillville and helped push through National Grid's proposed Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) facility in the Port of Providence--both projects that would have devastating impacts on local residents and fuel the climate crisis.

By refusing to reject fossil fuel money, Governor Raimondo has made a clear choice that the profits of fossil fuel executives matter more to her than a livable future for R.I.

Please chip in what you can to support the young people who stood up to fight for their futures on December 6th.
