Sunset park 54th St Apartment Destroyed by Three-alarm Fire
Fire happened on May 2, 2022 at 7AM
Fire broke out around 6am and quickly spread throughout the 40+ apartment building. Fire and black smoke rapidly consumed the building and the estimated 140+ residents were forced to evacuate. Known cause is an overheated e-bike that spread from the downstairs stop to the apartments. FDNY put out the fire, issued a vacate order on the building and continues to investigate. The building was terribly destroyed with structure damage, broken glass, and the aftermath of putting the fire out. The evacuation was abrupt and did not give people time to take anything – ID, medicine, money, clothes, everything was left behind and destroyed.
Among the 140+ displaced residents are many children (infants, toddlers) and senior population.
A pregnant woman with two young children is left without a home and belongings. Many seniors are concerned with their medical appointments and accessing medicine.
The fire did more than destroy material objects – it has caused a major disruption in the lives of these residents, many vulnerable.
Residents are facing a serious crisis – in need of stable shelter and restoring their lives.
Red Cross is providing hotel rooms until May 9, 2022 and after that people will have to move into their own arrangement or a homeless shelter.
These options are temporary and leaves the families in unstable position. We need support to assist the families recover from such a tragic circumstance.
