My oldest brother, Jeremy Schneider, was diagnosed with stage IV colorectal cancer in January 2015. He began treatment immediately at the Rochester Mayo Clinic and NEVER gave much weight to the statistics for this cancer, which is said to have an 8%, five year survival rate. From the start Jeremy has faced his cancer as ongoing skirmishes that he and his team of doctors planned to win. Jeremy has been through more than 12 surgeries, 10 hospitalizations, and to date over 50 chemo treatments. He is now receiving chemo every other week for maintenance, as surgery and radiation are no longer an option. With God’s help for 5 years and 11 months Jeremy has won each battle; but as you can imagine- all battles have their costs- and Jeremy and his family need your help to restock the arsenal so he can continue to fight the good fight! With Jeremy, it is ALWAYS A GOOD FIGHT!
We grew up in a Christian family where we learned to work hard, to be kind to all, and to serve and help others. Our whole family was involved in church and community service. As the oldest of four children Jeremy was born a leader, and Jeremy learned that his faith in God called him to service and to share the love of God.
While in High school Jeremy met the love of his life, Amy. They were married when he was 20 and she was just 19 years old. They shared a common bond of faith. Jeremy’s faith gave him a strong desire to dive into the Bible to learn all he could about God. With Amy’s full support he began his pursuit of ministry and learning by enrolling in the Minnesota Bible College in Rochester, MN. During that time their family began to grow. Today Jeremy and Amy, have three children: Isaiah, Naomi and Sam. Isaiah and his wife, Abigail, were just blessed with Jeremy’s first grandchild, Boaz, in December 2019.
Over the years Jeremy has worked various jobs but has always prioritized his ministry work. He is the Senior Pastor at Grace Christian Church in Parkers Prairie MN, and he shares his faith and talents by caring for his congregation in every way he knows how. That service is not limited to Sunday preaching and Bible studies- which he loves to do! (Despite having such stage fright when he first began his preaching that he would become physically sick before most sermons.) It includes helping others in any life challenge they face. He is a “go to guy” for people in need and has been for many years, which never changed even with his grim diagnosis. Jeremy is a servant, and no job is too big or small for him to undertake. With God’s will and team work needs will be met! If a call comes in and there is a family in need, Jeremy will find a way to make sure they get what they need. Roofing a house on a hot summer day…he’s done it! Home repairs… count him in. Car won’t run…he’s an avid reader and researcher who will figure it out! Jeremy is a team builder, a coordinator, and a counselor to anyone who asks for help. He is a Super Servant…all in the name of God!
He is passionate about his hobbies, especially fishing; teaching his kids fishing at the crack of dawn every weekend during the summer when they were younger, and he would barely wait for the ice to be 4 inches thick (minimum DNR requirement) before getting out on a frozen lake to drill a hole. Fishing provides an opportunity to spend time with others, teaching them to fish, and connecting with them-rod in hand.
Jeremy has ALWAYS been incredibly busy- “no time to idle”, he looks forward to EVERY item on his schedule. When I asked him why he doesn’t just say no to some things to have a more manageable schedule, he said that he genuinely wants to do it all, no opportunity missed! Jeremy loves life and lives each day to the fullest. The work he does is a labor of love and done with a happy heart. He will not complain about the opportunity to help others- it gives him GREAT joy!
More recently Jeremy has not been able to manage as heavy of a load as the cancer is taking a greater toll on his body, so in October, his eldest son, Isaiah, became his replacement as Senior Pastor at Grace Christian Church. But his service and ministry has not stopped and he continues to preach every other week at the church. Jeremy does not fear death- in fact he embraces his future with God when his work here is done. In July 2019 he lost his mother Marietta after a very short battle with cancer. She was a big part of his care team before her illness and he looks forward to his reunion with her as well. “I know where I am going and I look forward to it. When God says ‘Your work here is done’ I will not despair!”
As you can see from his story- Jeremy has strong faith and relationship with God. He loves serving people and wants to see them develop a relationship with God too, so they can experience the immense joy and comfort he has knowing that God is with him through every step in his journey. He is never pushy about it, but he is always willing to answer questions and give his understanding based upon the Bible. He especially loves kids and kids’ ministry. This past Thanksgiving I watched him sit in a little kid’s chair laughing and entertaining 7 nieces and nephews. His faith and love for life is obvious to all who meet him and the opportunity to share God has given him much strength and purpose.
Since his diagnosis and throughout each stage and change in his cancer road Jeremy has maintained his zeal for life, strong faith and unwavering and contagious positivity. From the start and to this day Jeremy has viewed his illness as an opportunity; he told me “I am excited about all the opportunities having cancer provides me, to meet new people and potentially help people build a relationship with God.”
I know that he’s getting tired of spending so much time on being sick, resting, and having cancer. He doesn’t like to complain though and tries to keep living life as best as he can; as he says, he’s just got a little cancer problem, and it has given him more opportunity to serve than he could have ever dreamed of as a well man! For that- he is grateful!
His family and his congregation are asking for your help in providing some relief. Any amount helps with the financial burdens they have, and prayers are always welcome. Bless you for your kindness during this stressful time.
