In Memory of 12 year old Sam
Donation protected
In November of 2017, 10 year old Sam Roberts told her mom and dad she thought she had hurt her leg. After noticing some swelling, they immediately sought medical care. What they hoped was nothing more than an infection was diagnosed as large cell lymphoma in only a matter of a couple weeks. Doctors at St. Joseph's Hospital worked aggressively to treat the cancer. In March of 2018 she finished her chemo treatment and we were thrilled to be told her scans came back "all clear".
In August of 2018, only five short months after completing chemotherapy, the family received news that the cancer had returned. This time the doctors would take a new plan of attack and treat the cancer with an immunotherapy drug and once scans were clear again, they would plan to do a bone marrow / stem cell transplant. The drug seemed to work miracles and once again by November of 2018, it appeared she was clear and ready for the transplant that was scheduled for December 2018.
This week, only a couple weeks out from her transplant, we were told the cancer has returned a third time and the transplant has been put on hold. Sam has begun a third course of treatment (another immunotherapy drug), and though it is early, we are seeing good signs that it is doing it’s job. As soon as it works it’s magic, she will be scheduled for her transplant and hopefully that will put an end to this cancer once and for all!
Sam’s parents have both been public school teachers in Hillsborough County for more than 20 years. Art currently teaches in Strawberry Crest’s IB Program and Toni is a teacher at Tampa Palms Elementary. Toni has had to take a leave of absence while she tends to Sam’s medical needs. Sam’s brother Jake (thankfully, also her perfect bone marrow match) attends Williams Middle School.
Any donations that you make to this family will be used to cover Sam’s medical bills, compensate for Toni’s lost income and assist them with making the renovations to their home that will be necessary to accommodate Sam following her transplant.
Your generosity, support and prayers are appreciated for this special family!
