Hi, I'm Janiece, one of the co-founders of Our Ocean School in the Mentawai Islands, Indonesia. We're raising funds to educate local communities, making them active participants in the surf tourism industry surrounding. I am excited to share our story with you!
We're the first female-only NGO in Indonesia, established in the typically male-dominated landscape of the Mentawai Islands. My co-founder, Rani and I have backgrounds in non-profit work, and this school aims to empower local communities through education. Our goals are to:
- Expand job opportunities: Teaching English to local people in the Mentawai Islands is crucial as it opens up job opportunities in the growing surf tourism industry, enabling them to communicate effectively with a global audience. Proficiency in English enhances their ability to engage with tourists, fostering a more inclusive and economically sustainable community amidst the burgeoning international interest in the region's surf culture.
- Elevate household incomes: offering education opportunities plays a pivotal role in expanding job prospects by equipping individuals with the skills and knowledge needed in the job market. As job opportunities increase, household incomes rise, ultimately contributing to the alleviation of poverty by empowering individuals and communities to achieve financial stability and improved living standards.
- Create gender equality: Providing education opportunities to all people, including in traditionally male-dominated cultures, is a catalyst for gender equality by breaking down barriers and empowering women with knowledge and skills. Education equips women to challenge societal norms, pursue diverse career paths, and participate actively in decision-making processes, fostering a more balanced and equitable society.
Local response:
During our soft launch, we enrolled 140+ children of all ages and skill levels, into Our Ocean School in the first week, which goes to show just how needed this school is in the region.
Your Support:
We're looking to raise $55,000 AUD which will cover the costs of the entire school for 1 year. Your contribution will directly empower local people in the Mentawai Islands, enabling them to build better futures for themselves and their communities.
