Support Community Green Space @ 462 Halsey Community Farm

A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
462 Halsey Community Farm was founded in 2012 by Bed-Stuy residents Shatia Jackson and Kristen Bonardi Rapp. The goal of the farm was to create a thriving agricultural and community center, providing residents with a chance to grow and share healthful food and foster connections with neighbors and land.

Since that time, our garden has grown into a communal growing space with 16 raised beds, all cultivated and cared for by members and volunteers. Our gates are open regularly so our community can enjoy the space.

WHAT WE’VE GOT GOING ON
At 462 Halsey, we have compost bins allowing neighbors to drop off food scraps at their leisure. Our compost team processes over a thousand pounds of food scraps each year.

In summer and fall, we use the garden space to host educational interactive workshops and community events. We have held mushroom workshops, a woodworking power tool safety workshop, a poetry reading and guided meditation, a bee workshop, hot-sauce making and an Earth Day celebration for the neighborhood.

WHAT WE WANT TO DO
Community green spaces have never been more important. With the reduction of city-wide compost programs, we plan to act as a community composting location, increasing our compost program, providing education, and utilizing the compost produced to reinvigorate our plants and better serve the community with our harvest.

In 2024 we also plan to host more community workshops spotlighting local voices on topics ranging from environmental preservation, culinary arts, creative arts, bee-keeping and more. All of this will be done while offering a space for community members to connect and become empowered to engage with the land around them.

The knowledge 462 Halsey provides through our programs helps to build earth-conscious citizens, and we hope to increase our local sense of sustainability and interdependence.

We need your support to do this. 462 Halsey is a 100% volunteer-run farm and we rely on the generosity of our community to keep the farm running. Help us raise $2,000 by April 30, 2024.
