Support Indigenous Resistance to Line 3 Pipeline
Indigenous activists and allies are fighting to stop the expansion of the Enbridge Line 3 pipeline , a pipeline that would bring dirty tar sands through untouched wetlands and the treaty territory of Anishinaabe peoples, across 227 lakes and waters including the Mississippi River and rivers that feed directly into Lake Superior.
This pipeline would violate the treaty rights of Anishinaabe peoples and nations in its path and cross watersheds where they grow wild rice, which is central to their culture. It would also spill, as all pipelines do, and support to the expansion of dirty tar sands industry at the moment when we need to justly transitioning to a renewable and just economy.
Indigenous-led resistance has successfully slowed building of the pipeline, which was supposed to be completed by 2017, but construction has now begun.
In response, hundreds of people have set up camps, braved freezing temperatures, and taken direct action to prevent construction from continuing, while putting pressure on the Biden administration to stop Line 3 once and for all.
The camps have been organized and led by Indigenous women and two-spirit water protectors, who are fighting against the bad (the pipeline) while building a vision for the world they want to see (self-determination, restoration of traditional knowledge etc).
On June 5-8, thousands from across the country converged in Northern Minnesota and put their bodies on the line to halt construction, pressure Biden to stop Line 3, and tell the world that the days of tar sands pipelines are over.
I believe that this weekend and this summer can and must be the moment when we come together to stop Line 3. This victory would mark a huge turning point in the broader fight for climate justice and respect for Indigenous sovereignty.
My heart is pulling me to be in Minnesota but other commitments prevent me from being there in-person. In lieu of traveling, I will be donating the amount I would have spent attending actions to support a legal fund for water protectors in Minnesota . Will you join me?
Thank you in advance for supporting this critical work for climate justice!
