Support a Deaf Filmmaker’s Cross-Canada Educational Film Tour

Hello!

My name is Alvin Witcher. I’m a Deaf filmmaker based in Ontario, Canada, with over 20 years of experience in storytelling, cinematography, and video production. Throughout my journey, I’ve created films that shine a light on Deaf culture, accessibility, human rights, and real-life stories that often go unheard.

As one of the very few Deaf filmmakers in North America—less than 1%—I’ve faced many challenges. Opportunities are limited. Networking in this industry is often inaccessible, and Deaf creators are regularly overlooked when it comes to funding, hiring, and collaboration. These barriers haven’t stopped me. If anything, they’ve pushed me to work harder, learn more, and keep creating films that matter.

Most of my work has been done voluntarily. Why? Because I believe in it. I believe in the power of education through storytelling. I believe that our stories—Deaf stories, marginalized stories—deserve to be documented and shared with the world. And I believe in creating content that helps build understanding between communities.

I’m now preparing to embark on a cross-Canada filming tour to document voices and experiences from coast to coast. This project focuses on capturing diverse perspectives and sharing stories that educate the public about Deaf life, cultural pride, accessibility, and human connection.

To make this possible, I’m seeking to raise $5,000 to cover travel and transportation costs. All of my time and work will remain volunteer-based—I’m not asking for a salary or fee. Every dollar raised will go directly toward transportation, accommodations, and gear transport as I travel across Canada filming these powerful stories.
