Support a Family's Move to Oregon for Safety

If you’re here, you’ve likely heard about the horrifying anti-trans legislation that was steamrolled through Iowa’s judiciary process in under a week. This law strips trans Iowans, including myself, of vital civil rights protections. While I have fought tirelessly for my community, I now have to think about my safety, my family, and my children. I poured everything I had into this past week, and I am drained. Many states still have protections for trans people, and one of them is Oregon. I do not want to continue living like this. I should not have to live like this. My family and I need to leave Iowa as soon as possible.

What makes this even harder is that I work in visual effects, an industry that has been hit hard over the past few years. The 2023 writers’ strike halted productions, and its ripple effects are still being felt. The recent LA fires also caused further disruptions. While I am still employed, work has been slow, making it incredibly difficult to save for moving expenses.

Our goal is to leave Iowa before this law takes effect—we are aiming for mid-June, if not sooner. We are setting up this GoFundMe to help with moving expenses, and we know this is no small ask. Every dollar makes a difference. We are also considering taking others with us if we can, even if it’s just one more trans Iowan escaping these conditions.

Once we are settled, we fully intend to continue advocating and fundraising to help others flee Iowa. We both already have jobs in Portland, and every single penny donated will go directly toward relocating. Any additional funds will be used to assist other trans people in escaping these unjust conditions.

And to those who will inevitably flood my comments with cruel words: make no mistake—this is not me admitting defeat. This is me protecting my peace, my sanity, and my family. Every trans Iowan deserves so much better than what Iowa currently offers.
