Support Abe and Cheryl's Home and Rebuild

Donation protected
UPDATE: Friday Oct. 4

Abe and Cheryl were able to make it back to the house where they found that everything on the first floor had been inundated with water and mud.
The cats were in good health and far away from the flood and were packed up to go to their new temporary home at the hotel. Cheryl and Abe spent some incredibly difficult hours slinging around muddy belongings and carpets for future disposal; they were exhausted!
It is important to note that in Western North Carolina only 1% of home owners have flood insurance because floods just don't happen in western North Carolina… so, everything is a loss in this unprecedented event.
They now have use of a car from a dear friend, so they can go back and forth from their hotel to the trail in the woods that leads back to the house. No hope of any road repair or power restoration anytime soon. They must walk through the bush for almost half an hour.
Your continued support will help them through this disaster… And it is hoped that there will be some funds to apply to the road repair since it is a private lane (300 yds.) , it will not be serviced by the county. Cleanup and repair is yet another crippling expense that looms in the future.
Please, if you can, dig deep and give what you can to give Abe and Cheryl a hand in this freakish weather disaster.

Hi, I am Annie Thompson-Bert and I'm beginning this emergency GoFundMe for one of my favorite past students, Abe Brereton and his wife, Cheryl Bradetich, who were rousted from their mountain home in Horseshoe, North Carolina, Friday by a landslide that devastated the lane to their house, leaving them trapped.

Abe and Cheryl were able to take their dog a half hour through the bush out to a place where they could get to a road, leaving their powerless house and cats stranded.

They found shelter at a nearby motel and are trying to make emergency arrangements to get back to the house for the cats and have applied for emergency assistance wherever it might be available.

Since their 300-yard lane is private, there will be no county repair crews to clear their way, nor any access for the utilities company to restore power.

Abe just had surgery four weeks ago for a total hip replacement and is doing all he can in this situation, but extra help and support are needed in this unprecedented emergency.

Abe and Cheryl settled in a place where they thought there would be no weather perils... but Mother Nature, as she often does, proved this wrong!

Funding is requested for their basic short-term survival and to work toward rebuilding a way back to their home.
