Support Abigail's Journey to Rebuild Bloom WNC
Donation protected
Abigail and her family’s flower farm Bloom WNC in Black Mountain, NC was completely destroyed by Hurricane Helene. The flower farm was her family’s livelihood. Any support will go towards rebuilding infrastructure, removing tons of gravel that washed into the fields and helping them to start farming again.
Any amount is greatly appreciated and helpful! Rebuilding a high tunnel is close to a $10k investment and the cost of excavating equipment to remove gravel will be in the thousands. Her irrigation comes from the creek along her property, which is currently filled with sewage from failed septic systems. The cleanup and rebuilding will be costly.
I am a fellow farmer in Asheville, NC whose farm was mostly spared by the storm. I understand the grueling work ahead and road to recovery ahead for Abigail.
A note from Abigail:
I am exceedingly grateful for you all. I definitely did not have the brain power to set up anything, and it didn't quite feel right to do so with so much destruction around us. Thank you Niki (Flourish Flower Farm) for doing this and being so proactive!
A quick note.....
It will be a long clean up process. Three of my field beds, compost area, and greenhouse area not only covered in heavy gravel, silt, and sand, but they have sewage and fuel in them. Because of this, I need to pause and file with soil and water to get an assessment and work on doing a safe environmental cleanup before I can even touch these areas. In the meantime, I used a few donations to do my payroll last week... It feels so good to pay your people, doesn't it?! I had to cancel my wholesale/florist orders and there are a few weddings I think will need to be refunded. BUT, Linda with Ampersand Bulb and Little Farmhouse Flowers has been so compassionate and understanding and canceled my tulip order with a full refund. It makes me SO SAD to not do winter tulips this year. But there is just no way I can do it with no city water, and a contaminated creek that I normally use to irrigate out of. I also canceled my plug order from the good folks at Banner Greenhouse and they are always so wonderful and supportive of me and my farm. I want to be wise with the money y'all donated to me, so I am letting you know that I will be putting this in a savings account for the time being until environmental assessments can be made and I can have a clear path of rebuilding. I will let you know when I have some good, (and sound of mind), decisions made. So many have offered to come up and help me rebuild, (OH MY GOODNESS, thank you), the time will come for that, but it is not now.
With much much gratitude,
Abigail
