Support Abundia's research on indigenous identity

Donation protected
Hello! My name is Cody and I am doing this fundraiser on behalf of Abundia Tristan, an Apache and Nahuatl trans femme migrant and a community organizer from Monterrey, Mexico.

Abundia is researching her Nahuatl and Apache heritage to reconnect to her roots, spirituality, and cultures while seeking inspiration for the many movements and projects she's involved in.

Supporting this GoFundMe will allow her to travel to Monterrey for a month to interview her paternal Nahuatl family and Apache ancestors who knew her maternal grandmother Abundia, a fellow activist. She will also visit archives and interview key people in Loma Larga about local organizing and abolitionist history.

Abundia has been an intersectional organizer for over 25 years, advocating for food accessibility and the rights of the indigenous, undocumented, disabled, women, non-humans, and the latine and queer communities in Mexico and the US. She has coordinated international students groups volunteering to help a Nahuatl coffee growers cooperate in the mountains of San Luis Potosí in northern Mexico, and was part of the team that facilitated the peace talks between the EZLN and the Mexican government in 1994. Abundia is also the co-founder of Atlanta-based grassroots collective called “Mariposas Rebeldes”, which creates safe spaces for latine queer and trans community to learn more about their culture and identity through food, agriculture and community organizing, and supports the movement to Stop Cop City/Save the Weelaunee forest .

I believe that ongoing colonization has kept indigenous people like Abundia from (re)connecting with their cultures, heritages, and identities. I also believe that ideas like "decolonization," "land back" and "reparations" require action, so I started this GoFundMe to support Abundia's work. I hope you'll join me in supporting her efforts to articulate a Nahuatl and Apache framework for approaching some of our most pressings struggles as organizers. Thank you for your support!

UPDATE: We're stretching the goal to $4,000 because Abundia just had to go to the ER (she's fine but it was a scare) and will likely have a big bill to pay. Our original goal was already conservative, so please keep sharing and supporting. XOXOXO
