Support Alberto's Family During ICE Detention
Donation protected
On Saturday, February 8th, 2025, while going to get a haircut, Alberto was stopped and detained by ICE in Spokane, WA. He is being held in an ICE detention center in Tacoma, Washington.
I met Alberto in 2019 at the US-Mexico border in Tijuana while volunteering for Al Otro Lado. Alberto arrived in Tijuana with the caravan, fleeing his home country of Nicaragua as a political refugee. In Nicaragua he received death threats and his uncle was shot for protesting against the Ortega regime.
Alberto legally entered the U.S. in 2019 and spent 14 months in detention in Mississippi, following every legal process. With a mix of perseverance and timing, he was released in 2020 and moved to Spokane, WA, where he built a new life for himself and his family.
He obtained a work permit and began to work at Ford Motors, attended ESL classes, joined the church, and played pick up soccer. In short, he became a part of the local community. His wife and two sons later joined him in Spokane, and this fall they welcomed a new baby boy.
Despite the hardships he has endured, Alberto remains one of the most positive and upbeat people I’ve ever met. He is a man of faith and he is a deeply good person. He is not a criminal. If he is deported he faces death in his home country.
These funds will support his wife, Yisel, and their three sons, ensuring they have a roof over their head and food while Alberto is in ICE custody.
