Time to Rally-
Alex has always gone out of his way to help and support others, and now he can use some help of his own.
After a few weeks of feeling flu-like symptoms, Alex’s family decided it was best to take him to the emergency room on Wednesday, March 29th as Alex’s health quickly declined. By the time he was admitted, Alex was unable to use his lower body in addition to being severely dehydrated. Shortly doctors also discovered swelling in his brain which was causing Alex to be confused and unaware. Alex’s doctors ran countless labs and tests for several weeks as his symptoms did not lead to a clear diagnosis.
On April 7th, Alex’s doctors were confident that Alex’s illness was due to severe nutrient deficiency that they believe has been going on for months. It has been several weeks and his doctors are still trying to understand the exact cause. On April 10th, Alex was discharged from Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Although this was good news, that was just the beginning as Alex was transferred to Shirley Ryan Ability Lab to begin inpatient therapy. During his stay, Alex is focusing on learning how to use his lower body again. His day consists of focusing on learning how to do daily tasks that we might take for granted.
After various weeks of inpatient therapy, Alex’s treatment plan will then include several months of day therapy. This means Alex will be able to return home, but his day will consist of numerous hours of speech and language therapy along with physical and occupational therapy. Finally, Alex’s treatment plan will conclude with outpatient therapy for another handful of months.
The last few weeks have been a roller coaster of emotions for Alex and his family. As a healthy, 28 year old, this diagnosis continues to be difficult. Alex has a long road to recovery, and it will be quite some time until he faces normalcy. His severe condition and strenuous treatment plan means he will be unable to work for some time. His family is asking for your support to help Alex alleviate some of the financial burden that he is facing.
The road will be long and difficult, but Alex is ready for the challenge. We thank you and appreciate all of the thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
