Support Alex's Road to Recovery After a Devastating Accident
Dear Friends and Family and Community,
We are reaching out to you today with a heartfelt plea for support for our beloved friend and dedicated dog-walker, Alex. Recently, Alex experienced a catastrophic and life-altering accident that has left her with very severe injuries and an incredibly challenging road to recovery.
On May 7th, Alex was struck by a pick-up truck at a mechanics' garage in Croton-on-Hudson. The driver, one of the mechanics, accidentally backed a pick-up truck into her, pinning her between the wall and the pick-up truck, causing her extensive traumatic injuries:
- Both Hips Broken: One hip required a grueling 10-hour reconstructive surgery involving the insertion of pins and plates. Prior to the reconstruction, pins were placed through her femur, above the knee, with 20 pounds of weights hanging from them for traction and immobilization.
- Pelvis Fractured in Half: This critical injury has significantly impacted her mobility and will require extensive rehabilitation.
- Gruesome Calf Laceration: A foot-long gash in her calf was initially treated with a 2-hour surgery. Unfortunately, this serious injury has become necrotic and will need at least two more surgeries and a skin graft from her thigh. If it weren't for a make-shift tourniquet by a quick-thinking bystander and another tourniquet in the ambulance, Alex may very well have lost her life that day.
- Hematoma Complications: A significant hematoma on her inner thigh has also turned necrotic, necessitating a minimum of 2 complex surgeries.
Alex has had 3 double surgeries to date, another double surgery scheduled for today, graft surgery and possibly more after that. All the additional surgeries have been devastating to her already-difficult recovery journey.
Despite these daunting setbacks, Alex's spirit remains unbroken. Her astounding attitude, her will to live, and her determination to recover inspires everyone around her. She faces a month in the regional trauma center, months in a care facility, and then months of extensive rehabilitation to regain mobility and independence. The physical and emotional toll of these injuries is immense, but what breaks her heart the most is being separated from her 3-year-old toddler, Marcel, who cannot visit her in the hospital. The inability to see and hold her precious child has been one of the hardest daily challenges for Alex. Videos and face-timing isn’t the same.
Dog-walking, overnight stays and pet care is more than just a job for Alex; it is her passion and calling in life. The joy she derives from spending time with her clients' pets and the love and care she provides are simply unmatched. Not being able to do what she loves and care for her furry friends, has been incredibly tough on her, and we know her furry friends miss her just as much as she misses them.
Despite the overwhelming challenges, Alex has been buoyed by the outpouring of love and support from her community. She extends her deepest gratitude for the hospital visits, flowers, balloons, food and snacks, gifts, get-well messages, prayers, positive thoughts, and well-wishes from family, friends, relatives, and clients.
Your kindness and caring has been a beacon of hope and comfort during this difficult time.
We are organizing this GoFundMe campaign on Alex’s behalf because so many of her relatives, friends, and clients have reached out since Day 1, not just wanting to contribute to her recovery but insisting we create a GoFundMe for her.
Now, more than ever, Alex needs our help.
The financial burden of her medical expenses and living costs is staggering, despite having insurance. She will be in the Trauma Center for a month before being discharged to a care facility; there, she will continue for 3 months for her broken bones and her reconstruction to heal. Only after both hips have healed, will rehabilitation and physical therapy then begin and by that time her joints and muscles will have to be retrained as well.
We are calling on all of Alex’s friends, family, relatives, loyal clients, and the broader community to come together and support Alex in this time of need.
Not wanting to overwhelm, our initial goal for Alex is set at $20,000 to help cover Alex’s most immediate and urgent medical and rehabilitation expenses but we know that Alex's journey to recovery will require much more as she will be in the Trauma Center for 1 month with multiple and on-going surgeries, in a care facility immobile for 3 months, and in rehab and physical therapy for the rest of the year in order to start to get back to what was normal for her on May 7th. Thus, we will update her fundraising goal in the future.
Once we reach this initial goal, our efforts will continue to be extended to cover the continuing scope of her medical expenses, rehabilitation, physical therapy, and other needs.
Your generous donations will help cover her:
- Medical expenses
- Rehabilitation
- Physical therapy
- Other specialized therapies poorly covered by insurance
- Necessary modifications to her home to accommodate future mobility needs
- Living and childcare expenses
- and more
Each and every one of your contributions will make a significant difference in Alex’s recovery journey, please donate and share this campaign with your network to help spread the word for Alex.
If you are unable to donate, please share this campaign with your network to help spread the word to others.
Alex has always been there for us, rain or shine, ensuring our beloved pets are cared for with the utmost love and attention. Now, it’s our turn to be there for her. Let’s show Alex the same kindness and support she has shown us over the years.
Thank you for your generosity and compassion.
