UPDATE: March 15, 2023:
On behalf of the Giro family, we would like to thank everyone who donated to Alicia's fund after her accident. The support and love means everything to our family. We're almost at our goal!
It's been almost 6 months since a car crashed into Alicia when she was leaving a Dolphin's game at Hard Rock Stadium and it's been a strenuous road to recovery. After the crash, Alicia spent a month and a half in the hospital fighting for her life and the majority of that time was spent in the ICU. When Alicia survived the accident and left the hospital, it meant she also had to survive many physical, mental, and emotional battles ahead. She lost hearing and eyesight in her right ear and eye, lost balance, fought a dangerous brain infection, and currently requires physical and neuropsychological therapies. Those are only a few of the challenges Alicia has faced throughout her time at home, but even with the odds against her, Alicia's optimism has never wavered. She perseveres every single day to be a stronger person - physically and mentally. We now look forward to the next major step. Alicia will undergo a cranioplasty procedure on March 17 and a surgeon will replace a portion of her skull that was removed to relieve pressure from her brain.
As Alicia continues moving forward in the right direction, we want to update everyone who has been supportive since day one. Please continue sending Alicia and the Giro family your strength as more challenges lie ahead.
Note from Alicia:
Hi all,
To say I’m blessed to write this entry is an understatement. I owe a massive thank you to all my supporters for sending love, donations, prayers, and thoughts. I’m not sure where I would be without all that love. Recovery has been a process like no other I’ve experienced. There have been really good days, but really bad ones, too. I’ve gotten frustrated with the waiting game for the final surgery and with myself for not being as sturdy as I once was. Then I remember how far I’ve come and refuse to look back since I’m not going that way. The final step in this 400 mile race will be getting my skull back through a surgery called a cranioplasty. The truth is I feel stronger and more confident thanks to physical therapy, which I am now attending three times a week. I am convinced my doctors and therapists were handpicked for me by God. To my family and friends - I’m not sure saying ‘thank you’ would be enough to cover the extent of my gratitude, but know that I made it through with your strength by my side.
Things to look forward to:
- Swimming
- Driving
- Tattoos
- Skateboarding
- Concerts
Things that make me happy:
- Family
- Friends
- Books
- Journaling

On Sunday, September 25th, our beautiful cousin, Alicia Auxiliadora Giro, was hit by a car crossing the street to go home after the Miami Dolphins game outside of Hard Rock Stadium. She suffered severe injuries to the brain, face, and leg and was immediately airlifted and treated at Ryder Trauma Center. That evening, she underwent a 4-hour brain and trauma surgery.
During this difficult time, we ask for your support and prayers as we put Alicia’s care and her caretakers’ in God’s hands. Currently, she is in critical condition and under intensive care. Her injuries will require a multitude of follow-up surgeries followed by a long rehabilitation and recovery process. Due to the current situation, our dear Alicia will be hospitalized for an unforeseen amount of time. We humbly ask our community to support her family during this devastating time.
Any contribution to help lessen the financial hardship to the Giro family is greatly appreciated. All donations will help cover a growing hospital bill, medications, and follow-up treatments, as well as the tedious and painful rehabilitation process that Alicia will have to undergo.
We know this will be a lengthy road to recovery; however, our dear Alicia - a St. Timothy, Lourdes Academy, and FIU alumnus - is a fighter and we are confident that God will protect her and provide strength to all around her. We truly appreciate your support!

¡Nosotros verdaderamente apreciamos tu apoyo!
