This is the story of Alyssa Trenary. A couple years ago after losing her job during covid she moved from CO to PA with her boyfriend Chris. She was many miles away from her family for the first time ever. After a few months of settling in she received a phone call on her 29th birthday that would change her life forever. She was informed that she had breast cancer and the treatment for this would be surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and years of medications and monitoring.
The first step in the process was her double mastectomy. The surgery took place on Thanksgiving day and was hours away from home. The cancer proved to be hormone positive HER2- Invasive Ductal Carcinoma with a very high chance of reoccurrence. It spread into her lymph nodes. This resulted in a complete axillary dissection. 23 lymph nodes were removed which puts her at lifelong risk for lymphedema.
The prognosis revealed that chemotherapy treatment was imminent. Chemo was 20 weeks long. Infusions were every week for several hours at a time. She had many trips to the ER during this period. One trip where she was admitted and spent 3 days in the hospital because of a blood clot in her neck, in the infusion port, which was caused by chemotherapy treatment.
After chemotherapy she underwent radiation. It was five days a week, for five weeks straight. It was easily one of the hardest parts of treatment for Alyssa. Once the appropriate amount of time had passed she was able to have her second part of reconstruction surgery. During this time oncologists and doctors stressed to her that her cancer has a high likelihood of recurrence. This means she has to be closely monitored and medicated for the next 10 years.
Alyssa is currently undergoing endocrine therapy which severely impacts her normal life. She was recently informed that in addition to her current medications she will have to begin another form of preventative cancer medicine. This new medication has similar side effects to chemotherapy, including a risk for things like hair loss, fatigue, and bone deterioration.
Alyssa has been working in retail since the end of radiation. However due to severe side effects from the current treatment Alyssa was recently forced to reduce her hours to part time. She has since then been forced to take a leave of absence by her boss to preserve her job and her health.
There has never been a Gofundme for Alyssa's battle with breast cancer. Our goal of this fundraiser is to help ease the financial burden of fighting cancer on one income. Focusing on the recovery of her physical and mental health is the biggest priority. The repercussions of treatment strongly diminish the quality of life. Things like neuropathy, loss of muscle mass, vision impairment, and dizziness are everyday health issues that are now requiring intensive testing.
While health insurance plays a role in covering many expenses there are still a lot of out of pocket costs. Your donations will help immensely with medical expenses such as bills and medications. To this day it has been the most helpful aid in Alyssa's journey. It will also help fund housing and living expenses. Having a safe, clean environment is of the utmost priority. Day to day living expenses such as over the counter medications, groceries, and transportation continue to add up. Alyssa has not been home to Colorado since before being diagnosed. She would love to take a trip home to visit her family and friends.
We are incredibly grateful for any contribution as every little bit helps. Even if you are unable to donate, sharing this campaign and keeping Alyssa in your thoughts and prayers is deeply appreciated. Thank you very much!
