*Update - Amy went home to be with Jesus in the late evening hours of January 7th. She passed peacefully after her courageous fight against cancer. She is now healed and perfect in Jesus’ arms. We know she has made a beautiful angel and while we cherish the precious memories of her, we are counting the days until we can see her beautiful face again! We love you so much Mama! Please know any donations will go to her service and expenses related. Services will be announced soon.
Amy Knapp is a vibrant, beautiful, strong, creative and talented 51-year-old woman who is faced with an unimaginable diagnosis of stage 4 breast cancer.
In early November of 2024 Amy began noticing back issues, assuming she had injured herself working out at the gym. She visited a doctor after thanksgiving who told her she had a compression fracture and that this was a common injury for those who deadlift weights. Amy was put in a back brace and told to rest at home until she could be schedule for an MRI to decide if surgery was needed. While at home Amy developed a concerning cough which was diagnosed as bronchitis and she was prescribed antibiotics. On December 19th Amy visited the emergency room for suspected pneumonia and increasing weakness. The ER ordered a CT scan which showed a mass on her right breast, in addition to pneumonia in both lungs. An X-ray also showed erosion of the vertebra with multiple spine fractures, leading doctors to give a preliminary diagnosis of breast cancer with metastasis to the spine. On December 24th, after biopsy and further testing, Amy was officially diagnosed with stage 4 Er positive PR positive breast cancer with metastasis to bones and a small spot on the brain. The oncologist stated this cancer was treatable but not curable. A treatment plan of radiation and hormone therapy was decided. The oncologist had a positive outlook, stating she expected the spot on her brain to completely disappear and the breast tumor/bone erosion to stop progression. However, Amy’s pneumonia continued to worsen, causing her to move to the ICU on December 31st. While in ICU another scan of Amy’s chest revealed her left lung was completely full of fluid. It was also apparent that multiple of her left ribs were fractured, caused by the bone cancer erosion. Amy was placed on BIPAP and told she would need a procedure where they inserted a needle to draw some of the fluid from her lungs. Upon attempting this procedure the doctor concluded that her left lung was not full of fluid, but instead of cancer. On January 2nd Amy began complaining of difficulty swallowing and doctors performed a swallow study which concluded she had been aspirating any liquids she was attempting to swallow. At this point Amy had not eaten more than a few bites of food daily for over 3 weeks, resulting in what the doctor called global weakness. Doctors suggested Amy be placed on a feeding tube and have nothing by mouth until she regained the strength to swallow. On January 3rd Doctors told Amy and her daughter, Allegra, that Amy was in late stage 4 breast cancer with metastasis to the bones, brain and lungs and had made no improvements during her 2 week hospital stay, but had continued to decline. Doctors suggested the family should start thinking about moving Amy to hospice. This was a devastating blow to Amy and her family who had only just learned of this diagnosis 2 weeks prior. A feeding tube and pain pump was placed and Amy was labeled as palliative care and told nothing further could be done for her in her current state of weakness. Amy told her doctor she was not ready to give up and she wanted to fight! Amy reminded her family that when her son was diagnosed with brain cancer as an infant he was given a 10% chance of survival and God healed him and she knew God could do the same for her! Amy and her family believe in the power of prayer and the healing only God can provide!
Amy now faces a race against time to gain strength enough to leave the hospital and begin chemo before the cancer takes over. Amy has not stood or walked in over 16 days. Rehab will work with her to get her strength up to regain her mobility so she can go home and begin treatment. Amy has been out of work since thanksgiving due to these health issues and needs assistance with the cost of her care and treatment. Amy has always been a hard working and independent woman, currently holding positions at both R Gregory Jewelers and Keller Williams Statesville. Amy had just started her dream career in reality and was excited to learn and grow in the business.
Amy is not one that would ever ask for help with her strong-willed and independent nature. However, her treatment and care will be extensive and impose a large financial burden. Please help to ease this burden for her so she can focus on gaining strength and fighting this disease!
