Support and Commemoration for Becky Flannery
Becky Flannery was born in Oregon, Ohio October 10, 1952, where she graduated from Clay High School, 1970. She went on to nursing school at Riverside. After nursing school she was hired at Toledo Hospital where she was part of the nursing team that began their NICU department. Becky is married to Michael Flannery whom she met while working at Toledo Hospital. She has two daughters and five wonderful grand-kids. Becky has always been a very loving and caring person, always helping others.

Back in December of 2018, Becky had outpatient surgery for a hernia. After the surgery, during the healing process she did not feel right and her incision wasn’t healing properly and she was having horrible abdominal pain to where she ended up in the ER. The ER, thinking that maybe she might have a bowel obstruction, ordered a CT where they did not find an obstruction but instead found multiple large tumors in her abdomen.
After weeks of multiple tests at Toledo Hospital and discussions of what type of cancer it was, Becky was sent to Cleveland Clinic for further testing. At Cleveland Clinic it was decided that she had Peritoneal Mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a cancer caused by asbestos exposure. There are only about 3,000 cases of Mesothelioma diagnosed a year, compared to about 260,000 cases of breast cancer a year. And out of the 3,000 cases, peritoneal mesothelioma only makes up about 15% to 20%.

Her course of treatment was decided to be surgery to remove as much of the tumor as possible followed up by what is called a HIPEC solution. HIPEC is a heated chemo solution that is left in the abdomen to circulate for 90 minutes.
The surgery did not go as planned. When the surgeon opened her up and got a good look at the tumors he did not feel that she had mesothelioma, and so he only removed enough of a tumor to do some more testing and closed her back up without doing the HIPEC. The surgery left her extremely weak. After more testing and a group meeting of pathologists to more closely study the slides of her tumor, the diagnosis was confirmed to be Peritoneal Mesothelioma.
Due to being weak from the surgery she was unable to undergo another procedure and so regular chemo treatments were recommended, in the hopes the tumors would shrink and she would regain her strength and be able to have surgery again. Unfortunately after four chemo treatments her PET scan showed she was only getting worse and the cancer had spread. After one last hail mary attempt failed to show an effective treatment available we have begun to say our goodbyes to our mom. She has entered into end of life care with Northwest Ohio Hospice at home.
With both our parents being retired and living on a fixed income we would like to try to help financially, (even in the tiniest way) our father with our mom’s eventual passing. We were hoping to raise some money to help with medical costs, some bucket list items for mom, and to give our mom the memorial service and marker she wants.

Becky is a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, friend and nurse. She has always taken care of others and now we need and want to take care of her in her time of need.
