Support My Mission Trip to the Dominican Republic!

Hello, my name is Ashley Paz. I’m a freshman at Baylor University majoring in Health Science on the Pre-Med track with a minor in Spanish. I am passionate about serving underrepresented communities, particularly the Latino community, and hope to one day bridge language gaps in healthcare to ensure all patients feel respected, informed, and comfortable in their own language.

At Baylor, I am a proud member of LASH (Latinx Association for Science and Health). This organization provides resources and opportunities for Latinx and Hispanic students pursuing careers in healthcare and science. Through mentoring, workshops, service, and research, LASH equips its members to become compassionate and culturally competent professionals while increasing diversity and inclusivity in the healthcare field.

This spring break, March 2025, I have been selected to participate in a mission trip to Azua, Dominican Republic, in partnership with One More Child, an organization that provides Christ-centered services to vulnerable children and struggling families.

What We’ll Be Doing

During this trip, we’ll have the incredible opportunity to:

• Shadow local physicians to learn about the Dominican Republic’s healthcare system and better understand how cultural and economic diversity influences healthcare.

• Work with local children through One More Child’s ongoing programs, contributing to their health and wellness initiatives.

• Lead community health projects, focusing on hygiene, nutrition, and overall wellness education to positively impact the local community.

This experience will not only enhance my understanding of public health but also allow me to serve a community in need and grow as a future healthcare professional. It’s an opportunity to embrace a global perspective on healthcare and to connect my passion for service with my career aspirations.

Why This Matters

As a Mexican American who grew up translating medical terms for my family, I know firsthand how critical cultural competency is in healthcare. This mission trip is an important step toward my goal of becoming a bilingual physician who can serve diverse populations with respect and care.
