We need your help!
The Athens County Dog Shelter, BARC and Friends of the Shelter Dogs are collaborating to improve a much-needed area of the shelter, its outside space. The dogs have access to 3 yards, but they are in dire need of updates to make them a safe and effective enrichment space. These yards have a lot of potential—if properly designed, they can decrease frustration and over excitement, offer a safe place to play with toys and chew bones, and provide opportunities to interact with volunteers off leash. The problem is the yards currently have several drawbacks that limit their safe use. For example, the lack of shade makes some yards unsafe during the summer and the current chain link fences can be climbed which means some dogs never get to enjoy yard time. We have a design in place to bring these yards up to date and provide much needed enrichment for the dogs.
Here's what we need:
- Slats in the fence
- Coyote rollers on the tops of the fences,
- Shade structures
- Dog play/agility equipment
- Ground covering (i.e mulch or rock) for when it is wet and muddy
If we exceed our fundraising goal, Phase 2 will expand these improvements to the walking trails. These trails would benefit from raised beds where dogs can dig and sniff for hidden treats and treasures. This type of interaction can go a long way towards eliminating shelter stress and boredom.
Your donation will go specifically to the needs specified above. We will provide regular updates via social media and our annual newsletter to keep you informed of the progress. There might also be opportunities for volunteers to help us install the new equipment. We appreciate your support for this project which will keep the dogs active physically and mentally while they wait for new families.
