Support Avette Dunn: Help Her Return to Work
Donation protected
An Alabama cafeteria worker has been fired for collecting donations to cover student lunches.
The Shelby County School Board decided to terminate Avette Dunn following a hearing on the matter that took place on Tuesday.
Officials stated that their decision was based on Dunn's dishonesty during questioning. Board members also noted that Dunn exceeded her job duties by asking for donations.
In her testimony, Dunn expressed her desire to ensure that no child went hungry. However, the district clarified that no child has ever been denied lunch at her elementary school.
“I made a mistake, and I believe I should be allowed to return to my job,” Dunn said. “In my opinion, I think I should have just received a two-week suspension, but I have been off since October.”
Dunn’s lawyers said there is not a specific rule that bans employees from asking for donations.
For example, they compared teachers who often do the same through online wish lists and fundraisers to provide supplies for their classrooms.
