Support Avy's Battle Against Heart Cancer

My name is Emily and I’m the proud mom of my sweet girl Avy. If you know anything about us, you know Avy is my heart and soul. She has saved me in so many ways and I want to do everything I can to save hers and give her the best life imaginable.

Avys health journey started on July 19th, four weeks after my double mastectomy. She became lethargic, cold, and seemingly uncomfortable. After days in the ICU, the only answers we had were pericardial effusion with no understanding of a “why”. She was STRONG in recovery and we went a few months with of some normalcy outside of the check in appointments with internal medicine.

Unfortunately, normalcy didn’t last long when last week (October 9th), Avy had another episode that I immediately knew was an additional incidence of pericardial effusion.

After additional pericardiocentesis to save her, we still had no answers. We were referred to a hospital in Houston to where we are today.

Follow-up in Houston led us to a diagnosis of heart cancer. I am currently staying in a hotel in Houston while we ensure she is stable (the drive from San Antonio to Houston likely exacerbated symptoms) and she will undergo a pericardectomy tonight. What comes after that is unknown, but her prognosis is guarded - especially without any interventions. She has been given a few months if we stay on top of care.

Avy has been a happy girl with her nub always wagging, even while she’s been in the ICU. I’ve decided to do everything I can for her until she tells me she’s ready. I pray she makes it through tonight’s surgery and hopefully we can discuss chemotherapy.

I make this page to support us as I have spent tens of thousands of dollars on her vet bills alone. Anything helps (even if that’s just a prayer - truly). I will make everything work to care for Avy without any support from others, but any support would be helpful as I navigate being off of work, covering bills, and taking care of myself and Maple (my other crazy pup).
