BASSIANI, the techno institution from Tbilisi, Georgia, has been on strike since November 29, 2024, in defiance of the oppressive regime that seeks to silence the voices of the people. The club represents an underground base of music enthusiasts, deviant and marginalised groups, and queer-feminist collectives alongside social movements fighting for justice, liberation, and collective empowerment. It has long been a sanctuary for those who dare to challenge the cultural and political status quo.
The widespread and relentless protests, which erupted in March 2023 and again in April-May 2024 following the adoption of a Russian-style "foreign agents" law, reignited in October 2024. This renewed wave of resistance was sparked by rigged and falsified elections, the illegitimate government's suspension of EU accession talks, the passing of anti-LGBT legislation, and the alarming rise of far-right authoritarianism, accompanied by systemic terror and repression.
The ongoing crisis threatens not only the survival of marginalised communities but also the integrity of civil society as a whole and Georgia's progress toward becoming a democratic nation free from oppression and Russian imperialism. Amid protest rally crackdowns and brutal attacks on citizens, including journalists, more than 500 demonstrators have been arrested, with over 80% reportedly subjected to physical abuse, torture, and humiliation in custody.
In these challenging times, Tbilisi's club culture stands as a powerful symbol of resistance. Global solidarity is essential to keeping BASSIANI alive during its closure. Funds raised will help ensure the club remains intact and that its community can continue to uphold its resilience.
Help preserve this countercultural movement and its role in defending freedom, justice, and equality.
