As many of you know, Becky Maag has been courageously battling multiple meningiomas since 2019. Meningiomas are very common, especially in women, and people often have them and do not experience any symptoms. The majority of meningiomas respond well to treatment and do not grow back once removed. Because of this, meningiomas are not studied as much as other types of brain tumors and doctors still do not know very much about the causes and treatments for Meningiomas.
Becky underwent surgery to remove her tumor in 2019. Genetic testing that was done on the tumor showed that it was a very uncommon variation of meningioma that grows back aggressively. By 2021, the tumor had regrown so much that she needed another medical intervention and she went through radiation therapy. That stopped the growth of the tumor for a while but by spring of 2024, the tumor was growing again and was big enough that it was causing symptoms. It was decided that Becky would have to undergo a second surgery which took place in June 2024. An MRI that was done September 2024 showed that the tumor grew back so aggressively that it was now the same size as it was before the second surgery. At this point, the doctors suggested that Becky should try to get into a clinical trial because there are no other effective treatments left that they did not already try. Becky was accepted into a clinical trial at NYU Langone but in December 2024, Becky received the devastating news that the trial medication was not having effect on the tumor and it was growing the whole time. Becky was removed from the trial and was told that the tumor was now so big that the only option left is to undergo a third brain surgery which is scheduled for 2/18/25. Since the tumor has been so aggressive, the doctors said that surgery will not be enough and that soon after surgery, Becky will have to undergo a more intense type of radiation therapy. After radiation, Becky will have to have medication infusions every two weeks indefinitely.
The ongoing battle is physically, emotionally and financially exhausting for Becky, her husband Frank, and their daughter Julia. Becky is incredibly resilient and has the most positive mindset, but she and her family need our help more than ever. We are setting up this GoFundMe to help cover the costs associated with medical care, travel, and time away from home and work.
Through all of this, Becky remains a fighter, and is full of determination. Let’s rally around her and show her that she is not alone in this fight. Any donation—no matter the size—will make a meaningful difference in easing the financial burden on her family.
If you are unable to contribute financially, we ask for your continued prayers, love, and support. Please also share this campaign to spread the word.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for standing beside Becky, Frank, and Julia during this incredibly difficult time.
