Hello! Call me Beej. I'm a writer that has become disabled due to a 2017 work injury that was never properly treated (despite my efforts—I went to two different podiatrists and was told it was "nothing") on a body that already is delicate (I have joints that are too flexible and that means they're loose and prone to spraining, dislocating, and repetitive stress injury).
I'm gonna be blunt: I have become trapped in my house. I have stopped being able to go places/do things like museums, the theatre, camping, historical recreation, travel, do my own shopping, and other things I used to love doing. I can't even take a short walk around my neighbourhood for my mental health. Sometimes I can't even go outside in my own yard to enjoy the flowers and trees!
The good news: This year, I finally got a doctor who listened to me, and prescribed a wheelchair. Yay!
The bad news: My insurance company will only cover one specific model of wheelchair, and it does not fit my body or my needs! I had their people come measure me and let me sit in one and everything, and it was too small and would make my hold my joints at angles that would cause further injury! Yuck!
So, it looks like I need some help from the community because I'm gonna have to just buy the right wheelchair myself.
I have found one that was invented specifically by people that believe in right-to-repair and are wheelchair users themselves; so, pushing it is far less likely to damage my (very weak) wrists, and it can be repaired at any bike shop! It can also be modified with bike parts, if need be, giving me the freedom to go wherever I want, repair and modify my chair myself, and generally regain my liberty! Here's a little video from the company showcasing what the chair can do:
Thank you for reading, and for your donation! I hope you have a day blessed with laughter! Stay silly!
