A note from Julie:
"Thursday, my compassionate friend, Kat, gave my mom a generous donation to use where needed. As my mom has been fortunate not to lose her home (yet; electric did not pass FEMA inspection), she decided to use it to help her friend, Amy Mullinicks, who owns a little gem in McEwen, Memories & Marmalade. Her store has been feeding the flood victims and volunteers since day one, and they posted that they needed sides and drinks. My mom went to Sam’s and got items needed to make new potatoes with green beans, cooked cabbage with bacon, and macaroni & cheese, and drinks. She couldn’t find Styrofoam containers anywhere, so she went to the Dollar Tree to get 192 plastic containers. While ringing her up, the cashier said, “Honey, did your garden come in all at once?” My mom explained what they were for, and the woman donated the containers.
Friday, I went to Walmart to get big containers to put the sides in to be divided. At checkout, the person in front of me was about $6 short, so I paid the balance. While I was at there, Walmart gave me a $50 gift card to buy totes for people that have no homes to put their salvageable contents. As I was struggling with the ten totes, a stranger saw me and struck up a conversation. As I was paying for the totes, she walked up and gave me $40 cash to help. Earlier, Memories & Marmalade posted another need for Styrofoam coolers. I took the money given from the sweet lady to buy 13 coolers. Before I left the parking lot, my friend, Tracey, messaged me to see if I still needed totes and told me when I could come pick them up. Before I finished this post, one of my favorite professors ever (only tied with her daughter), wrote to check on my mom and said she would send money to buy more totes. So many people have called, texted, or stopped in to have a chat with us. They have listened when we share our emotions about the devastation to our sweet little town.
I have been completely immersed in the news and social media worrying and praying for the people of Humphreys Co. Saturday, we are making a trip to clean out my mom’s refrigerator and help where needed. I am not prepared to see my hometown in person, to hear the stories, and to hug people through tears. There are so many people that have talked about seeing God in Waverly. Volunteers are serving with their time, talent, and treasures. I am thankful to God for this reminder to love thy neighbor. I am thankful for so many examples of stories and acts of service like this that brought such bright sunshine after the rain. God is so, so good #waverlystrong #prayforwaverly #prayforhumphreycounty"
