Support Brad Cureton: Healing After Car Accident
Donation protected
My name is Raven Nocerini. My dad was involved in a pedestrian vs. car accident almost two months ago in the U.S. Virgin Islands. He was severely injured and has a long road of recovery ahead of him. He had just started a new consulting job in St. Thomas, USVI. He had only been down there for two days when he was hit by a car walking to the store. He was on the phone with my mom when the accident occurred. The EMT called my mom and let her know what happened. We didn't hear anything else for about 12 hours. I searched hospitals and luckily found him on the first try. After speaking with the doctor, we learned that he had two fractured vertebrae in his neck, stitches on his elbow and head, a large blood clot behind his knee, a brain bleed accompanied by a severe concussion, and he was bruised badly head-to-toe. Unfortunately, the care he received there was sub-par. They didn't have a C-collar big enough to fit him, so they just told him to keep his neck straight. He couldn't move his left shoulder, and they didn't investigate that injury any further. He was in the hospital down there for almost two weeks before they "cleared" him to fly home. With the help of the company he was working for, we finally got him home after two weeks of feeling utterly helpless in the situation. After 10 hours of travel time, we picked him up from the airport late at night. The doctor from the USVI had simply told him to follow up with his primary care doctor. The next day, we all were having concerns about his injuries, so we took him to Medical Center of the Rockies emergency room. The doctors there were in shock that he was cleared to fly at all. They told us that we were extremely lucky he wasn't paralyzed after the traveling and time in the hospital. The trauma team immediately admitted him to the hospital. They informed us that he needed surgery for his neck injury. They also discovered that the reason he couldn't move his left arm/shoulder was because he had badly torn his rotator cuff and would need surgery to repair that as well. We got the cervical neck fusion surgery scheduled for the next day. The surgery went great, and he is recovering well. The next hurdle is getting his shoulder surgery scheduled. We tried to go through UC Health, but they are booked out until October. We got a different referral from his primary care doctor for Banner Health. We are hoping they can get him in sooner than October. He is doing much better than when he returned home to us, but there is still a long road ahead until he is able to get back to work. We are in the process of working with the USVI police department to locate the police report on the accident and follow up with the person at fault. We are also going to be pursuing temporary disability, but unfortunately, these things take time. We are in need of some assistance helping them get through these next several months until he is recovered enough to return to work. Thank you for your time reading my dad's story. We would appreciate any and all help we can get at this time.
