Brandon "BEEF" McBeath flew home to California on Saturday March 15 for Spring Break. When he got home he had severe swelling in his left arm and labored breathing. His mother took him to Urgent Care from the airport and after having an EKG, chest xray, and blood work, they were sent to Kaiser Hospital in Anaheim. There Brandon had a CT scan and ultrasound. He was then admitted that evening into the hospital. Follow up testing included more blood work, another ultrasound, and a needle biopsy. All tests confirmed a diagnosis of primary mediastinal B-cell non Hodgkin lymphoma. He has a softball size mass in the middle of his chest behind his breastbone surrounding his superior vena cava and putting pressure on his aorta. Thus causing the swelling in his arm and shortness of breath. He began his first round of chemo on Monday March 24 and ended on Friday March 28. He was then able to come
home and rest for 2 weeks w weekly blood tests to monitor him. He returned to the hospital on Monday April 14 to start his 2nd round of chemo which will be a 5 day in hospital stay again followed up by a two week rest. He will have 6 rounds of chemo all together and should complete treatment around the middle of July. The Doctors say the cancer will "melt away like ice cream " and he will not have to have any radiation or surgery. Brandon is a senior and was supposed to be graduating May 10 w his degree in Biology. However, with this recent diagnosis he will be unable to return to OU and will instead be finishing his classes online. He will return to OU in the fall to walk and receive his diploma. His mother, Melissa, returned to Oklahoma the weekend of April 10th-13th w a family friend. They, along w another mother and daughter packed up his belongings and had his car shipped home to California.
They're confident in his Doctors and are assuredly Brandon will be cured at the end of all this.
