Support brave healthcare workers operating in Myanmar
On February 1, 2021, the military of Myanmar seized control of the country.
Since then, the military junta has systematically targeted healthcare workers for their participation & leadership in the organized resistance, known as the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM).
The background of decades of civil war and military rule have had a devastating impact on Myanmar's healthcare system, greatly impacting people's ability to access quality health services. Nurses are at the forefront of the health system crisis.
Since the 01 Feb 2021 military coup, there have been 1,087 attacks on Myanmar's health care system.
At least 880 health workers have been arrested, 97 killed and 117 injured undermining health care providers’ ability to maintain safe staffing levels to effectively meet patient needs.
Health facilities have been damaged over 180 times impacting the population’s access to health care.
(Security Insight, Nov 2023).
Healthcare workers in hiding still risk their lives to care for their communities in secret "pop-up" clinics.
Join the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) Diploma in Tropical Nursing students to raise funds for and stand in solidarity with these brave healthcare workers.
We are fundraising for THET (Tropical Health Education Trust). THET aims to increase support for investments in global health, and aims to support healthcare staff worldwide. THET do extraordinary work all over the world and have, with partners, been at the forefront of the UK effort to support health workers in Myanmar through education programmes and wider.
THET Myanmar programme:
100% of donations will go directly to nurses & doctors operating clandestinely in Myanmar.
No amount is too small to give.
How else can you help?
1. Write your representative or union asking them to do more in the face of Myanmar military junta's violations of the Geneva Convention and how they are protecting international healthcare workers.
2. Contact media outlets urging them to increase coverage of the ongoing atrocities in Myanmar.
3. Stay informed of the situation
Remember:
"The only thing required for evil to succeed is for good [people] to do nothing”
Let's do something!
