Support Brent and Cassie's Move to Safety

Donation protected
I'm raising money for two of my good friends, Brent and Cassie, to get their pets to safety and help them move into more stable housing. In short, this fundraiser will help pay to transport the animals they can't take with them here to Michigan to live with me, as well as the health certificates and vaccines they will need before we can arrange transport. Transportation quotes alone have been roughly $1000. Anything left will be gratefully put forward to help pay for apartment deposits and moving costs. Depending on the difficulty and expense of finding housing we may increase the goal at a later date, but this should take care of their immediate need.

Whenever possible I will be posting quotes, receipts, and other confirmation that your money has gone where it is needed.

If you've known us for a while then you may remember that several years previously we were fundraising for them in the wake of losing their house in Hurricane Harvey. That money successfully helped them reach safety at the time and provided basic necessities as everything they owned was completely destroyed.

Unfortunately, lack of qualifying insurance coverage on the house, a meager allowance from FEMA, out of reach housing prices, COVID, and the draconian disability laws that severely limit the amount of savings they are allowed to keep, have together forced them to live on the good graces of a friend who provided them a temporary place to stay for reduced rent. The money has run out and that option is rapidly coming to a close, and we are back at square one. While we are looking for housing options that will accommodate the low rent needs of two disabled seniors on fixed incomes the first and largest barrier is that they will only be able to take their two cats with them, and the three stray cats and stray dog they have been looking after and trying to rehome for three years will be out on the street.

Texas is exceptionally hard to place animals in. The shelters are full to overflowing, so much so that they routinely ship their animals to other states, and we've had no success trying to contact dozens of rescues as far out as Louisiana or posting on facebook, craigslist, and other pet finding sites. We were forced to conclude that to get them to safety, we have to get them out of the state. I volunteered to foster or keep them, along with a couple good friends, but cannot make the 14 hr drive myself at a cost lower than shipping, and this is certainly not an option for Brent and Cassie with the fragility of their current vehicle. Their animals are their family, and it will sharply reduce the stress and budgetary expense if we can ensure they are going to live in a safe place.

Thank you so much for reading, donating, and sharing.
