To hear the words, “you have cancer” takes your breath away. To be told your child has cancer all but stops your heart. Just nine days before Christmas, Alexis and Britt Jones learned their three-year-old son, Briar, has B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (B-All). While the doctors are hopeful his cancer is curable, Briar is high risk because his blood counts were so elevated upon diagnosis. As of right now, Briar’s treatment plan will consist of two years of aggressive chemotherapy.
Since his diagnosis, Briar has been transported via life flight to Children’s Hospital of Atlanta, CHOA. He has undergone surgery, had a port put in, and has had several rounds of oral and IV infusions of chemotherapy. His current chemotherapy involves home care of four days of oral chemo and three days off. Additionally, for the next two years, Briar and his parents must travel weekly from Bainbridge, Georgia to CHOA in Atlanta for his IV infusions. The family travels on Thursday, Briar receives his treatment on Friday and must stay overnight for observation of any reactions to the chemo he receives.
Alexis has all but had to quit her job to provide care for Briar. Briar’s dad, Britt, has had a drastic reduction in the number of hours he is available to work due to the travel involved in the weekly trek to CHOA. The decrease in income coupled with increasing travel and medical expenses creates a financial strain on this young family.
My heartfelt request to all is twofold, first and foremost, please put Briar at the top of your prayer list along with his medical team and his parents. Secondly, if you are able and moved to do so, donations to this young family would address so many of their financial needs.
On behalf of the Jones’ family, thank you all.
