Hi Everyone,
I am Tami Keen, Brittany Geerdes' cousin, and am asking for anyone who can help her at this time to give (no amount is too small!).
Brittany discovered a lump on her left breast in mid December 2023 and was diagnosed with triple positive breast cancer in January 2024. Her initial diagnosis was that the cancer was caught early and was a stage 1B, but due to the tumor (measuring 10 cm!) being HER2+, was especially aggressive and so chemotherapy was started right away. When the doctors conducted the MRI to get a better look at the tumor, they noticed something suspicious on the right side, but said that it was probably nothing because the breasts "don't talk to each other" and the chances of getting breast cancer in both sides at the same time is less than 2%. Nonetheless, she underwent an MRI guided biopsy shortly after and they discovered that she also had cancer on the right breast. Brittany has ductal cancer on the left side and ductal and lobular cancer on the right side. She has so far undergone 6 months of chemotherapy and immunotherapy and just had a double mastectomy about a week ago. Just a few days ago, we learned that the cancer has spread to her lymph nodes which was very shocking, even to her surgeon and oncologist.
Brittany has been a pillar of strength through this initial journey of ups and downs and has gracefully navigated some drastic changes in her diagnosis. This curveball has changed how they are going to treat her cancer, which unfortunately means adding many more doctor appointments, chemotherapy, and additional surgeries in her future, including reconstruction. She is unable to work and is trying to pay her COBRA insurance premiums monthly so that treatment can be continued, along with rent and daily living expenses.
Brittany is a registered nurse who has dedicated her life to helping others, and is now on the other side, and will be out of work for the foreseeable future, prioritizing her health. Your support for Brittany during this time is more appreciated than you will ever know.
