Support Bushwick Families Displaced by Fire
Donation protected
Hi everyone, I'm organizing this GoFundMe to help out the families that have been displaced due to a fire in their building. On July 16th, around 3am on Evergreen Ave in Bushwick (next to Jefferson st) the building next to mine was set on fire by a man named Stanley Garcia. He was put in the building as apart of a subsidized living initiative. The other tenants have repeatedly complained about him to management and all complaints were ignored even though he has had similar incidents and has been known to act out aggressively. Most were sound asleep in bed when the fire was started & no alarms went off to alert the situation. When they tried to get out of their building Stanley was blocking the door and tried to stop them from doing so. 11 people, including young children, were been taken into the hospital with injuries, one of them being a young boy who was brought in critical condition & placed into a coma. Another is a girl with severe burns to her legs. All 8 apartment units have been ordered to vacate and deemed unliveable by the city for the foreseeable future. The landlord has been completely unresponsive in this situation and has basically told his tenants he does not care. They need any kind of financial help they can get as the city is expensive. Most of them have missed work the last couple of days and will have to miss more. The families appreciate everyone donating and are going to use the money for whatever they need it for for the next while whether it’s clothing, groceries, finding a new housing situation, legal action etc. The more money we raise the more each family can get. There are around 7-8 total families a good amount of them have over 5 people many of them have kids as well. Red Cross has put most of them up in hotels for the week but after the week it is unknown where they will move to next. Every last dime will be given to the residents to help them through this hardship. I do not need any money I have a good job and could never even consider taking a dime from any of this. As god said “love thy neighbour as thy self”. If I were in the same situation I would hope someone would help me the same. They have also been through so much and I’m hoping this can alleviate some of the stress of the next few weeks without them having to worry about it. As the money comes in it will be divided amongst the families and I am in contact with each one affected.
