The Butler Historical Preservation Society (a non-profit 501c3) is a small town organization that has worked to restore this 1836 Methodist Episcopal Church as well as the only known cobblestone schoolhouse (built circa 1824) in the U.S. Organized in 2003, the church now functions as our museum.
The original congregation raised $1,000 to purchase the land and build the church using trees cut on site and milled at the local sawmill nearby (which is still in operation)! The original structure was of the Greek Revival style. In the 1960's, some Italianate style detailing was added. The sanctuary contains the original 2 story shuttered windows. The crowning glory is the unique bell tower.
The building is on the National & NYS Register of Historic Places.
With our town Bicentennial coming up in 2026, we need to repair some rotting wood and give the former church a fresh coat of paint.

The heritage we share is worthy of our best efforts to preserve it.
