Canon Norman Lynas suffered a severe neck and spinal cord injury in an accident on Thursday, July 30th which has left him paralyzed from the neck down. He was swiftly transported to King Edward Memorial Hospital in Bermuda and then later airlifted to Lahey Hospital near Boston, Massachusetts where he is being treated for a spinal cord injury. Canon Norman fractured his neck at the C4 vertebrae rendering a crushed spine.
Due to the nature of his injuries, Canon Norman will need ongoing medical care, a full time caregiver, rehabilitation and specialized equipment, the cost of which is far above what insurance will cover.
According to the Christopher Reeve Foundation, care in the first year alone for High Tetrapelegia (C1-C4 injury) exceeds $1 million. Please see https://www.christopherreeve.org/living-with-paralysis/costs-and-insurance/costs-of-living-with-spinal-cord-injury for more details and resources on Spinal Cord Injuries.
Canon Norman has been serving God’s people for 40 years as a priest, not only within the Anglican Church of Bermuda and the wider Bermudian community but also in both Northern Ireland, as well as the Republic of Ireland where he served as Dean of St. Canice’s Cathedral and made numerous Community contributions for almost 20 years.
In gratitude for his service, the Vestry of the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity of Bermuda have organised and supported this vital international fundraising effort and ask for all your support as well. Even the smallest contribution is appreciated.
Every dollar raised through this GoFundMe campaign will be directly used for Canon Lynas’ care and medical needs.
Should a day come when funds are no longer needed, any dollars remaining in the account will be donated back to the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity and Bermuda to be used for charitable purposes.
