Briarwood Nature Preserve, nestled in the heart of Louisiana, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the conservation and celebration of the state’s rich natural heritage. Founded as the beloved home of Caroline Dormon, a pioneering botanist and conservationist, Briarwood has been a sanctuary for native flora and fauna since the early 20th century. Caroline Dormon devoted her life to studying, protecting, and promoting the native plants of the Southeast, and Briarwood stands as a living testament to her work.

As a nonprofit organization, Briarwood relies on the generosity of donors, volunteers, and grants to continue its mission of preserving Louisiana’s unique ecosystems. The preserve is home to many rare and endangered species, and our work involves not only maintaining these habitats but also educating the public and fostering a deeper appreciation for the natural world.

We are currently focused on two critical projects to uphold and extend Caroline Dormon’s legacy. The first is the restoration of our irrigation system, which is vital for the survival of historic plants that Dormon herself planted. These plants require precise and consistent moisture levels to thrive, and without a functioning irrigation system, they are at serious risk. The irrigation system has been out of service since the Tornado of 2019.

Separately, we are also working on the Bay Garden Restoration Project, which aims to save the historic Louisiana irises. This project is focused on a different area of the preserve and is not related to the irrigation system but is equally important in preserving the beauty and biodiversity of Briarwood.
