This was supposed to be our dream beach ride at Pt. Reyes. It turned into the most horrific experience. While riding on the Coast trail, we stopped to let the boys get a drink. We were ON the trail and Chaco took a step to bend down to get a drink and the ground gave way under his hind end. We ended up in a 3-4’ sink hole. I managed to jump off into the nettles and poison oak but as Chaco tried to get out, the ground gave way and he tumbled 30+ feet down the hill. Every time he tried to get up, he fell again and again. Vern was with him for over 4 hours, talking and calming him while I tried to get help and calm Rabba. From 1:15 until 8:45, Chaco was stuck under a tree in a ravine almost 100’ down the ravine. The SAR team was amazing in figuring out how to extract him. My eternal gratitude goes to Dr. Terri Crocker who risked everything to not only direct the rescue but to walk over 3.5 miles with Chaco and us to Palomarin trailhead from 9-11:30PM.
Chaco is home and now the healing for all of us begins.
Unfortunately, the veterinarian bills, medications and the cost of Chaco’s rehabilitation and future tooth extraction are adding up.
We never imagined our vacation would end this way.
