Covid Death Toll in Indigenous Communities

The Chilchinbeto community located in the western portion of the Navajo (Dine) Nation has been hard hit by COVID -19, and this is an appeal for funds to provide basic amenities and necessities for those families being impacted by the virus.

A majority of the community does not have plumbing nor electricity; especially the elderly people. Some members of our community do not have any means for transportation.

Fall/Winter is the hardest time that adds stress to the elders in the community, Most do not have electricity and they use wood stoves for heat and cooking purposes. Due to lack of transportation or gas costs, the people in the community resort to purchasing their fire wood from vendors or others. A truck load of wood runs anywhere from $180 to $240 depending on distance and availabity, one truck load would last about a month and a half if spared accordingly.

Monies are being collected for the following:

Firewood and coal

Homemade masks or store bought for the elderly

Toilet paper/paper towels

Canned food (soups, luncheon meat, spam-a navajo delicacy, vienna sausage)

Dry foods (crackers, hamburger helper)

Hygiene supplies (hand soap, shampoo, etc)

Bottled water

Baby necessities: including formula, diapers, and wipes

Hay and feed for livestock

Pet food
