Hello, my name is CJ Schrat, and I am a struggling survivor. In 2008 I I was the victim of gun violence that left me with a prosthetic eye, and a bastion of trauma. While walking home from a catering job while in college I was approached by a man and subsequently attacked. I lost my eye, mobility, and my sense of self in that moment. Despite being approached by a KCPD patrol car which described the scenario as 'suspicious', I was left alone by those sworn to serve and protect, only to be assaulted and violently attacked as the officers drove on. I endured 8 rounds to my legs, left hand, and face; every wound taking its own weight. I am limited in mobility due to persistent gun fragments that remain in both legs, hand, and face: these limit my functional dexterity and movements as well as cause severe arthritis and pain that makes daily activities difficult. I have dealt with epilepsy before I was a survivor of gun violence, and continue to deal with it in my daily life. I recently lost employment due to my medical issues and am due to be evicted from my home on May 21st. I fought hard to maintain my living environment but was unsuccessful to attain rental assistance in time. I presently am facing houselessness and am seeking any aid I can while I rebuild my life and get back on my feet. I have been actively seeking work after leaving the retail cannabis industry, however it has been an uphill battle. My daily life consist of persistent issues that at times leave me vomiting from pain, and unable to function. I deal with severe vertigo regularly, as well as continued pain in my legs, wrist, and face. As a queer individual I was shunned by my family, and have no connections to rely on when I am in need. I have fought for years to keep myself a float in retail, food service, and remedial jobs but have ultimately lost my battle in staying afloat.

I am asking for funding so I can keep fighting and struggling with the best of us in my position: I am asking for help to survive.

I presently am in need of funds for housing for myself and my service animal. I received generous food donations for my dog recently and have over 100lbs of food to keep her happy and healthy, I received food stamps on the 9th totalling $291.00 so food is an issue only come the end of the month presently.

My main goal is my dog and I in a safe environment as I continue to rebuild my life through trauma and difficulty. I am desperate to not end up in a situation that sees me in a position for harm or further mental health issues.
