SUPPORT CLAIRE, FEMKE, ASA, AND AUGUST
Donation protected
Many of you already know the bright and incredible Claire and have watched her gracefully grow baby Femke over the past eight months. What some of you may not know is about a month ago, August and Claire discovered that she has what is known as a complete placenta previa. A partial previa is fairly common and is easily fixed when the placenta shifts off the covering of the cervix. Unfortunately, Claire’s placenta is not going anywhere.
Due to this complication, Claire spent over two weeks in the OHSU hospital and is now staying at a home in Portland, so she is within 30 minutes of OHSU and the NICU. Mama and baby are both healthy at the moment. The current difficulty is the tension between letting sweet Femke stay in the womb as long as possible while not letting the pregnancy advance to the point of Claire incurring normal contractions. The danger with the former is obviously wanting the baby to develop to full term. The complications of the latter are if Claire starts having normal contractions, she could hemorrhage.
At this moment, baby is expected to be born, via C-section, on November 11th, as long as no complications arise. This is 26 days earlier than her expected due date of December 7th. During the past few weeks their family has been divided between caring for Claire and tending to Asa and the rest of their responsibilities. To make this feasible they both had to leave work much earlier than expected and will likely need to take additional time off work after the birth to help support Femke growing to her original birthday.
Claire, Asa, and August are all in good spirits. As we all know, they are the type of people who handle difficult situations with incredible grace and emotional maturity. That being said, the past few weeks have been hard not only emotionally, but also financially. The uncertainty of Femke’s development and Claire’s health, dovetailed with the difficulties of Covid have only exacerbated their situation.
We know 2020 this is been a hard year in innumerable ways. If you have anything extra to give, Claire, August, Asa and Femke would benefit greatly. Any funds given would go towards hospital expenses incurred, child-care for Asa and the cost of renting a house near the hospital while Femke develops. As they say, a little bit goes a long way.
