Support comic artist Kelly Williams' Medical Recovery
Donation protected
On Tuesday, October 22, comic artist Kelly Williams (artist of Skeeters, The Dark, The Dead and the Damned) was admitted to the hospital due to complications from diabetes. He'd been attending New York Comic Con that weekend and managed to hold it together until the end of the show when he returned to his hotel and began throwing up.
Luckily his wife Mandy was able to bring him to Mt. Sinai quickly where he was stabilized. He was diagnosed with diabetic ketoacidosis, a serious condition where the body cannot create enough insulin and begins breaking down fats for energy. This causes acids to build up in the blood, which can quickly become life-threatening if not treated quickly enough. Luckily, Kelly got the care he needed in time.
My name is Sebastian Girner. I'm Kelly's friend and collaborator, and I'm taking it upon myself to organize a crowdfunding drive to raise money to help Kelly and his family through this difficult time.
Like most professional comic book artists, Kelly is under-insured, and his stay in the hospital is accruing costs he's expected to cover.
Kelly is one of the most talented, tireless, and kindest comic book artists I've had the pleasure of working alongside, and if anyone deserves a break in an industry that is famously not easy on the people that keep it running, it's him.
We're looking to raise money to cover Kelly's hospital bills, and allow him to recover enough to make the trip home.
It is regrettable that, time and again, working comic artists are required to depend on the solidarity of their colleagues, readers, and fans to be able to stave off medical emergencies, but until such a time as these systemic failings are addressed, we rally and come together to take care of one another.
