Support Community Based Film: FIERCE
Donation protected
John Acosta has partnered with New Mexicans To Prevent Gun Violence to create a film centered on New Mexico's battle against violent crime and gun violence. He is asking for help to fund the community-based project. “Creating a film is a big endeavor and I want to make sure I have enough to support those helping with the project,” says Acosta. I’ve assembled a great team that is willing to volunteer their time, but this is not what we do, I realize it's important to compensate them for their efforts.” Acosta also wants to pay the subjects for their emotional time and labor. "They are doing the work to better the community and deserve payment for being with us on our set."
Logline
A solutions based documentary exploring the strength and resiliency of New Mexicans as they work to prevent the root causes of gun violence in a state with one of the highest crime rates.
Synopsis of the film:
A heartfelt documentary featuring the stories of violence interrupters working together in the community as organizers, educators and advocates, “ I want to visually display the community's strength, perseverance, and power,” the Albuquerque native comments.
New Mexico is always depicted in our media as being in a constant state of violence, however the reality we live in is different. We want to provide a counter narrative of hope, “These stories are constantly shared and repeated, which affects our community deeply in ways that we don’t even realize,” The filmmaker explains. “But it's not who we are; we are strong, powerful, and fierce.”
Spanning stories from breaking multi-generational trauma to inspiring youth activists, Acosta hopes that his documentary will inspire current and future generations,, “I want to embolden the viewer towards hope and morale so that they not only interpret what is happening in New Mexico but instead engage in transforming it.”
